On Monday 8th
December our Circle was at Gallows Gate and as the name suggests,
this was known as a place of public execution. Gallows were located
at the edges of towns, by roads, or on hilltops, where victims could
be seen. They were often permanent to act as a deterrent and a symbol
of the power of justice so exactly why did Bogof choose this spot? At
the circle a good turnout on the chilly hilltop Boggy's trail led us
up and down the new cycle pathways at a good pace, although on a
recovering calf injury this pace proved too much and I took the first
Short split to the Sweet Stop. From here we could
see some of the brightest Christmas lights in Torbay below us, on-on
over fields and lanes until we found ourselves back near the ring
road and in the distance... was that an apparition swinging in the wind
from the Gallows at the gate ?
At least a warm
welcome awaited us inside the Lord Nelson were the generous Landlord
had laid on an excellent spread and took part in our Down Down
ceremony ….. we have many award hats missing so if you have one
please pass it back to Teapot thanks. The Landlords first
award was to “Young Hasher of the Year” “ Soapy.” Next the Landlords "ring" award to “Pillock of the Year” Mouldy Dick ! Our DD choices next
were to Boggy for his excellent trail although a little Gnome seemed
to be hovering! Manpig chosen for smelling awful “like roses”
after he went home first for a shower! Our final choice was
a DD to the Landlord himself!
