Pocket Rockets 18th Birthday Hash
2nd February 2026
T’was on a Monday evening, the first one in Feb-ru-ary
rain was lashing down again, the wind sounded quite scary.
We huddled up outside the Bell, stood shivering in the street
Zimmer frames and walking sticks, our fancy dress complete!
Pocket Rocket our GM, was the hare also tonight
Played hookey from his school today, to ensure the trail was right.
Laid in flour with long short splits, so well he knows this town
The longs start running up the hill, the shorts, the road ran down!
The walkers had to find their own trail, as none was even laid!
The hare was full of apologies said “ Ran out of time I’m ‘fraid!”
it really didn’t matter ‘cos Bovey’s such a pleasant place
4 ‘old people’ hobbled off and walked at their own pace.
The longs ran along East Street and left turn up Trough Lane
(Almost up to Harvey’s farm) and then ran down again…..
Hospital hill’s a steep one, then Priory and Cromwells way
Followed on behind the shorts, ran through the park to play!
They ran beside the river, luckily not under water
Never going off the trail – That’s a thing you never ought’a
Crossing the little stone bridge, checking for flour in the rain
Through the muddy woodland “Onon” to almost Ashwell Lane!
Then, heading back along top path, zig zagging through the woods
Avoiding mud and tree roots, heads hidden in their hoods.
Almost back through Southbrook now, thatched cottages so sweet,
But not so great when soaked right through, and saturated feet!
On home at last to Bovey, in the pub everybody knows
Now dressed as young or old folk, in waistcoats or baby grows.
Cheerio beerio decked the pub, with balloons for birthday boy
And Soapy made a Chocolate cake for everyone to enjoy.
and now at last he’s turned 18 and can legally buy a beer
So if you think he owes you one - He’ll pay you back this year!!!
But get in quick before he’s skint, and completely out of pocket
‘Cos Its back to school tomorrow! - but thank you Pocket Rocket.
Next week’s trail is Bee Flicker’s, at Teignmouth by the sea
Assisted by S.M. Ellie, and the pub is The New Quay.
Onon to next week
Soapy
