A WARM WELCOME FROM TVH3

Welcome to the Teign Valley Hash House Harriers of glorious South Devon. You are guaranteed a warm welcome and a great hash experience. We are the 'Party Hash' and we run from pubs all over Torbay, Dartmoor and the Teign Valley every Monday evening at 7.15pm. Our trails are marked with flour, chalk or sawdust and take in woodland, streams, byways, bridle paths and rolling countryside. We cater for all abilities, you needn't worry about keeping up, a leisurely walk with others or a good paced run if you're fit - you choose. The run duration is anything from 30 minutes to an hour and the distance is normally between 3-6 miles depending on whether you decide to take a short or long trail. Your first run is free, so come along and give it a go! After the run hashers enjoy a drink and food in the pub. On many occasions, the pub will lay on a 'Hash Menu', food specially for hashers.

WHAT TO EXPECT AT YOUR FIRST HASH

Starts soon after 7:15 pm each Monday.
The Grandmaster will gather the hash together in a circle and welcome Virgins & Visitors to TVH3 and inform the group of pertinent news or upcoming events.
Hares will announce details or the trail, number of long and short splits and regroups.

Down-Downs - sometimes at the circle but usually in the pub after the run. Hashers and harriets (lady hashers) have a half pint and under age hashers have a soft drink or water. If you are driving, just ask the RA for water.

A Down-Down is a means of punishing, rewarding, or merely recognizing an individual for any action or behaviour. Once awarded, the downdown must be drunk without pause, otherwise the RA may take action!

Individuals may be recognized for outstanding service, or for their status as a visitor or newcomer.

Down-Downs also serve as punishment for misdemeanours real, imagined, or blatantly made up.

Such transgressions may include: wearing new shoes, pointing with a finger, or the use of real names rather than hash names.

Hash Names

The use of real names (nerd name) during an event is discouraged, and members are typically given a new "hash name," usually in deference to a particularly notorious escapade, a personality trait, or their physical appearance.

Members are named after attending the hash on several occasions or if something noteworthy occurs to prompt a naming.

Other hashers may share stories or observations about the individual, with the final name being chosen by general consensus from all suggestions put forward by the hash.

NEWCOMERS TO THE HASH
Completely new to hashing? Don't know what to expect? Worried, shy or nervous? You needn't be as all newcomers or virgins as they are known, will receive a warm welcome. When the hashers are called to make a circle - about 7:15 pm each Monday, the Grand Master will welcome all hashers and after various notices about forthcoming events etc are dealt with, he will ask if there are any visitors from other hashes or virgins present. You will be asked to come forward and be introduced to the hash. A tip to remember, don't wear new trainers as these are frowned upon by the RA (Religious Advisor) and will incur a sprinkling of flour over them. That's all there is to it and you can then step back and enjoy the run and the social get together after in the On Down (the pub). Whatever your pace, there are certain to be others who will keep you company along the trail. Walk, jog or run - it's up to you.
Hashing is all about making friends and having fun, so just turn up any Monday and have a go.

TALES OF A TAIL-END HASHER

The Words for TVH3 Hash No 2117 on Mon, 23 Feb 2026
Circle at Trendlebere Down, Middle Car Park, TQ13 9LT.
Hare: Beefy

Weather - Not raining & actually dry! Positively balmy at 12.5 C!!
For starters - everyone found the car park! Always a good start for the Circle.
Present were: Beefy, Pisswell, Psycho, Missing, Woodlend, Tongue & Groove & dog, Piltdown, G'Orgy & Choca, Ernie, Strap-on, Manopause, Wet Johnny, Pocket Rocket, Coldtits, SMEllie, Beeflicker, Melon Picker (Soapy is not well tonight), Well-Hopped, Big End & dog. Total 19. Apologies if I have missed anyone.

I missed part of the Circle (fumbling for something in my car) but SMEllie was still looking for Hares for March - please speak to her in the pub after or let her know if you can lay a trail. No Hares, no trail!
Bossy Pisswell volunteered Coldtits to do the words by asking her to show her hand if she was there. Cheeky mare!

Over to the Hare, Beefy, who announced Walkers 2.5 miles, Shorts 3.2-3.5 miles, Longs 5.5 miles? Marked in flour. Beware X's on left (not good), X's on right (good). Got that, everyone? Lots of checks, a fish hook, X's and some splits? Beware some "technical bits" later. Plus a Sweety Stop - hurrah! Beefy had also seen 5 or so Deer earlier.

From the car park, ON ON across the road into the off-road hinterland. A wide level path brought us to the Fish Hook, first 5 to turn back on themselves and re-join - probably 10 did! Onwards uphill to a section through woodland track, complete with hooting Owls to add to the spooky evening.

Next a split, Walkers straight on, Longs and Shorts to right. Found myself at the back of the Shorts after the hilly bits (I had not run since early Dec due to suffering repeated virus infections), with Pocket Rocket, who was also suffering. His torch had failed, so loaned him my spare, then he decided at the next split to take the Walkers trail and back to car park. I realised then that my Strava had not been recording, so I wasn't sure where I had come from and where I was going. I thought better of pursuing the Shorts as a Walker on my own in the big dark wood, so I eventually set off after Pocket Rocket but never saw him again until the On Down.

Somehow found my way to Beefy at the Sweety Stop, next to the Charcoal Seat (see photo) - great selection of sweets, thank you. We were joined by a few other Hashers including Ernie, Strap-On, Missing, SMEllie, Woodlend, Tongue and Groove and dog but where were the Longs? There was an interpretation board for the Charcoal production history but Beefy didn't seem to know what it was all about.

After the SS, it was downhill through the woods to a complicated junction of paths and I lost the trail here. Tried left and right and only found X's. Eventually, Ernie and Strap-On arrived and we found the way back up the hill again, where there was a (new?) back-check we hadn't seen earlier? We broadly stuck together (Ernie is such a gent with the ladies, isn't he?) and were joined by Woodlend, Tongue and Groove and dog, who helped check the many checks.

The woodland paths levelled out a bit and we crossed a lovely bridge over the stream (avoiding the flour that had been placed to tempt us into the stream).

I think some never found the SS, like SMEllie, who was probably led astray by Pisswell, who shamefully short cut back to the pub. Beefy was not impressed later!

Eventually, coming up to 9pm, we all found the welcome On Home and the car park. I'd recorded 1.69 miles from the SS, so it was probably 3 miles or so in total for my Short and Walkers combined trail. SMEllie had got back from the Short 10 minutes earlier than me and was busy in the car catching up on her messages. Probably still trying to find Hares for March!

We exited right out of the car park and 2 miles or so down the road, we arrived at the On Down, the welcoming Kestor Inn, car park full, so parked on the roadside. Its always so dark here as no street lighting but the small moon crescent and some stars were shining at last tonight, adding to the misty / mizzlely evening glow. You had to be there to appreciate this on a mild February evening after the wet winter we've had!

In the pub, only Beeflicker was tucking into the Chilli, which looked good. Once everyone arrived, Pisswell officiated with the Awards and Beefy generously provided the six Down Down beers and a water, thank you!

First award was a 600 runs badge to G'Orgy P'orgy, after an amazing 17 years hashing with TVH3. Next up was a 400 runs badge for SMEllie and a 200 runs badge for Strap-On. All well deserved supporters of TVH3 and Down Downs taken together to a rendition of "Get A Life, Get A Life, Life, Life ...".

Then it was time to ambush Pisswell with a birthday award for yesterday with all the right notes in the wrong order. Amazing how she found a birthday hat in her bag of tricks! Always prepared, I'd say.
She had the Jester hat to award and after some "domestic discussion" with Beefy, this went to the Hare, for pulling out all the Hash trail laying tricks of Fish Hook, Ha Ha, X's, checks, back checks, etc., used to make our unique trail tonight plus a SS. Thank you and you did it all on your own, laying some 8 plus miles for our pleasure.

For anyone interested, this area is a rare UK temperate rainforest - see Bovey Valley Woods managed by Woodland Trust Wood Group: https://www.woodlandtrust.org.uk/.../bovey-valley-woods/
ON On to next week at The Ten Tors Inn, Exeter Road, Kingsteignton, TQ12 3NP, with Hare, Beeflicker.

(Words by Coldtits, press-ganged by cheeky Pisswell, with a perspective from a tailender Hasher, for a change.)
