We circled up in the car park on a warm (hot!) sunny evening. There were some announcements, then over to the hare. Beeflicker had carefully planned a trail with the On Down at the Star, but the circle at Stover. Luckily he’d remembered just before he laid it that he’d forgotten to mention the Stover part to everyone, so hastily replanned. It’s just as well we didn’t all have to run to Stover first as it was already a generously-proportioned outing.
The pack set off up the road, through a housing estate and then out to the west of Liverton. Pisswell and Psycho stopped for some roadside clothes shopping before realising they’d forgotten their purses. We carried on down a grassy footpath, then into the back of Old Liverton past an impressive chimney. The front of the pack were nattering so we missed an obvious flour arrow leading us up a green lane….or was it laid after we passed it? The jury is out. Up and up Tipleyhill, then I think this is where the walkers left us to return back down again.
Beefy and I forged ahead, down to Liverton Brook, then a long steep climb towards Ilsington. We scampered back down through the woods, leaping over fallen trees, a bit more road, then some virgin territory for me; Kate’s path. As we climbed back up through the fields we turned around to see Haytor silhouetted by the setting sun. Surely we must be heading back towards Liverton by now? I hadn’t packed my torch! I stopped to brush a tick off that was crawling up my leg. We passed some stripy Galloways, then climbed back up Tipleyhill. Through some paddocks, then into Great Plantation woods.
We were on the home straight and then the trail led us into a deep moat. I looked around for the ladder but none was to be found. Somehow, with tired legs we hauled ourselves out and crawled the last few hundred metres to the pub.
Most hashers were already gathered in the beer garden and once everyone was safely back the downdowns were awarded to Beeflicker for an excellent trail, Strap Dancer for baby clothes shopping, Flowery Twats for following Smellie into a bush, Smellie for high altitude escapades, and Beefy for a PDA.
Thank you Beeflicker for a great trail, we certainly got a run for our money!
On on to next week with Beefy from Cockington. BRING A TOWEL!
