Hashers – Able Semen, Ernie, Fukawe, Gorgy Porgy, Beefy, Miss Inn, MissMash, Pisswell, Piltdown Man, Roger the Dodger, Smellie, Swinger, Well Hopped, Wet Johnny, Manpig, Cold Tits, Bluebird (pub), Teapot (pub) and Wet Fart.
Prior warnings of sparse carparking did the job as even Cold Tits arrived before the off. Circled up outside the Crown and Sceptre cautionary tales were told by the Hare of windy, open land and a building where hashers must head away and pass a blue tent which may or may not be there.
Down Petitor Lane and then trouble at a check where the front runners were still sniffing around for a trail when the hare sent them on their way again along the coast path, stopping at a VP for a great view of the Cary Arms, lit up above Babbacombe Harbour. Then under the Cliff Railway at Oddicombe and on through the woods past the Cary Arms where the Walkers headed up the steep road never to be seen again. The Long and Shorts stuck to the coast path and climbed up to Walls Hill where said building was found and, with backs to the wall, the intrepid hashers headed out into the night across the open downs. The blue tent glimmered in the distance and with shouts of ‘On On’ the hashers thundered past to the probable terror of those within.
A long downhill and out onto the road where the Longs and Shorts parted company at Ansteys Cove Carpark with the longs following the trail down Ilsham Road, and through the long green that leads down towards Meadfoot Beach. A call back by the watchful hare was needed when a turn off into the woods was missed as they were all too busy reminiscing about a weirdo in a pub last time Swinger ran here or some such tale. Kents Cavern soon loomed out of the darkness but alas, no side ventures into the caves had been arranged.
A long tarmac section followed with several call backs for Fukawe, who was too busy leading to bother looking for arrows, this let Well Hopped and Miss Inn have a few moments of glory as FRBs before they were reined back in! The way home led through Cary Park with a stop to play on the See Saw and then the On Home sign was spotted and, with a few last twists and turns through the churchyard the intrepid longs arrived back at the pub, a splendid 5+ miles under their belts.
Back in the pub the fun had only just begun, with some colourful characters in attendance who were eventually scared off. The elusive BlueBird circled and landed briefly before returning to roost on the other side of the bar where poetry was taking place. Word was that the Bluebird would be singing so all trooped through and heard his beautiful song of No More Rum. Well Hopped had a story or two and earned herself a Down Down for the privilege, followed by one for Fukawe who lived up to his name several times during the trail!! Another DD for the Hare and then an ice cold half pint of water for Miss Inn for taking a photo of Piltdown Man’s list of attendees to use when writing the words (good idea I thought)!!
On On Miss Inn
