A WARM WELCOME FROM TVH3

Welcome to the Teign Valley Hash House Harriers of glorious South Devon. You are guaranteed a warm welcome and a great hash experience. We are the 'Party Hash' and we run from pubs all over Torbay, Dartmoor and the Teign Valley every Monday evening at 7.15pm. Our trails are marked with flour, chalk or sawdust and take in woodland, streams, byways, bridle paths and rolling countryside. We cater for all abilities, you needn't worry about keeping up, a leisurely walk with others or a good paced run if you're fit - you choose. The run duration is anything from 30 minutes to an hour and the distance is normally between 3-6 miles depending on whether you decide to take a short or long trail. Your first run is free, so come along and give it a go! After the run hashers enjoy a drink and food in the pub. On many occasions, the pub will lay on a 'Hash Menu', food specially for hashers.

WHAT TO EXPECT AT YOUR FIRST HASH

Starts soon after 7:15 pm each Monday.
The Grandmaster will gather the hash together in a circle and welcome Virgins & Visitors to TVH3 and inform the group of pertinent news or upcoming events.
Hares will announce details or the trail, number of long and short splits and regroups.

Down-Downs - sometimes at the circle but usually in the pub after the run. Hashers and harriets (lady hashers) have a half pint and under age hashers have a soft drink or water. If you are driving, just ask the RA for water.

A Down-Down is a means of punishing, rewarding, or merely recognizing an individual for any action or behaviour. Once awarded, the downdown must be drunk without pause, otherwise the RA may take action!

Individuals may be recognized for outstanding service, or for their status as a visitor or newcomer.

Down-Downs also serve as punishment for misdemeanours real, imagined, or blatantly made up.

Such transgressions may include: wearing new shoes, pointing with a finger, or the use of real names rather than hash names.

Hash Names

The use of real names (nerd name) during an event is discouraged, and members are typically given a new "hash name," usually in deference to a particularly notorious escapade, a personality trait, or their physical appearance.

Members are named after attending the hash on several occasions or if something noteworthy occurs to prompt a naming.

Other hashers may share stories or observations about the individual, with the final name being chosen by general consensus from all suggestions put forward by the hash.

NEWCOMERS TO THE HASH
Completely new to hashing? Don't know what to expect? Worried, shy or nervous? You needn't be as all newcomers or virgins as they are known, will receive a warm welcome. When the hashers are called to make a circle - about 7:15 pm each Monday, the Grand Master will welcome all hashers and after various notices about forthcoming events etc are dealt with, he will ask if there are any visitors from other hashes or virgins present. You will be asked to come forward and be introduced to the hash. A tip to remember, don't wear new trainers as these are frowned upon by the RA (Religious Advisor) and will incur a sprinkling of flour over them. That's all there is to it and you can then step back and enjoy the run and the social get together after in the On Down (the pub). Whatever your pace, there are certain to be others who will keep you company along the trail. Walk, jog or run - it's up to you.
Hashing is all about making friends and having fun, so just turn up any Monday and have a go.

TVH THE (SPLENDID) WORDS

TVH3 #2132, 8th June 2026.
Cockhaven Arms, Bishopsteignton.
Hare: Roger the Dodger.

Who was there:
Roger the Dodger with visitor, Myrthe, from the Netherlands; Well Hopped and James, her brother; Big End; Piltdown Man; Georgie P'Orgy and granddaughter Monica; Melon Picker; Bee Flicker; Zen Emptiness; Ernie; Fukarwe; Pollyfella and Lisa (pub only); Man Pig; Wet Fart; Coldtits; Swinger and son Devin; Warm Front; Psycho and Beefy.

Apologies: what follows was written as a four-line verse. It changed itself and I cannot edit back.

'Twas the dry afternoon of the eight day of June,
The morning had been so much wetter.
The Hare had gone out and, without any doubt
Conditions had ended up better.

Hashers arrived through roadworks contrived
To stymie our favourite pastime.
Nice chats in the sun, we waited to run
More clement than the Circle was last time.

The Hare brought a guest, we all can attest
At Hashing she's a total beginner.
A pertinent fact: her country is flat,
Our terrain is likely agin her!

And as is the norm, the Circle did form
(To some people, annoyingly late).
There we two on their bike so, whether you like
It or not, it is rude not to wait.

With the GM unseen, it'll usually mean
Piltdown Man puts on the mantle.
The same every week, it's hands up to speak
A sack full or, merely a scantle.

So, from SMEllie's list, two dates have been missed:
So far off it's not worth a mention.
I suppose I should say- in August, okay?
At least now she's got your attention.

The Hare took the stage, the Hash to engage,
There's a Long and a Short and a Walk.
A stop you will find (if you see the sign).
It's all laid in flour and blue chalk.

Out left on the Trail, the hill made some quail,
We'd gone no real distance at all
When Psycho sat down on a bench near the round
Until she heard Warm Front's "On" call.

On into the sticks and, what a great fix
For the blues that the working days bring.
Greens of all hues and fantastic views
See hovering Larks as they sing.

Capillary lanes had turned into veins
And arteries for many drivers.
We all had to share the little to spare
With departers as well as arrivers.

The Trail ran us down to the main road from town,
A right turn took us all away.
With no-one behind, we pressed on to find
Big End to show us the way.

Changing the scene, we ran up the Teign
On seaweed and pebbles and rocks.
The shoreline was wet but, I managed to get
A handful of sand in my socks.

Psycho had found herself off the ground,
She scaled the wall with such ease.
She hadn't made time to go for a climb.
Her hobby? It's more like a disease!

So Dodger's S/S, in a field,
more or less the same place it had been before.
Of treats there were many and worth every penny
As we hadn't been charged at the door!

The greeter was there with his strange happy stare
Our good friend who's Gnorman the Gnome.
Man Pig was late, and in a right state,
Having first found the On Home!

Quitting the Stop with the temperature drop
And the shadows beginning to fall,
Those who were left, were not bereft
As Dodger urged "Please, eat it all!"

After all that and, feeling quite fat,
We rolled our way back to the Inn
To get tidied up and something to sup.
So then the Down-downs begin.

The Down-downs:
Did they go to the Ball? We won't know, at all but
Lisa has Prince Pollyfella.
I know it's a crime but, we'll use up that rhyme for
Lisa is his Cinderella!

"This heart of mine, will be one, with thine." Quoth he
On his other knee bended.
(Put feelings like these in parentheses)
So, now they're each other's "intended".

Navigation appalling or, beer was a-calling?
Man Pig had gone the wrong way.
To the wrong football ground but, the S/S was found.
By then it was late in the day!

Follow the Trail? The idea went stale
So Warm Front suggested a turn.
Increasing the distance had met no resistance:
From their folly they really must learn!

To pick on this beauty was Man Pig's sad duty,
She gave him a look full of scorn.
Being "posh" was the charge,
Which is why, by and large,
She looks "To the manor born."

The Hare at his best, his work was expressed
In the Trail and the Sweetie Stop cited.
High on the scale, we'll all have a tale,
In this I am sure we're united.

On on, Beefy.

P.S.
Elegant diction or terrible fiction?
Don't worry, you won't hurt my feelings.
Too high ambition for "Words" proposition,
I ought to stay clear of these dealings!

COCKHAVEN ARMS

Run #2132 Monday 8th June Circle up 7:15 pm from the Cockhaven Arms, Bishopsteignton with Roger the Dodger.
PLEASE NOTE that there are roadworks in place along the A381. Access from the Teignmouth side will be closed but the approach from Newton Abbot should be open. From Newton Abbot, proceed along the A381 until the garage on the left and turn left there up into Cockhaven Road. The hare advises that there is no food available.

TVH THE WORDS Run #2131

We met on a wet dreary Monday 1st June at Coombe Cellars but were greeted with a warm welcome from the hashers. Beeflicker had laid the trail in flour and hopefully enough marks would still be visible with the on and off showers . At the circle Soapy reminded people that the Devon Nash Hash 2027 website is now live to have a look, and that registrations open 13th July!

We left the car park and there were options of longs and shorts. I opted for the shorts, still a good 4 miles ad the longs just over 5 miles. Not sure on the walkers distant but if they did the long route, they would still walk 5 or so miles, it would just take a long time so best not that option!

Running round the edge of farmers fields trying to guess the crops, one had rape seed that managed to get all our socks shoes and legs soaking wet at the start of the trail, already regretting not wearing my waterproof socks! Next was winter barley starting to crop up, very apt seeing as Nash Hash 2027 is farmer themed so was a talking point. Didn’t spot Teresa may frolicking in wheat fields it must be said.
As always, I like to see all the wildflowers on the trails. Spotting cow parsley blowing in the breeze, the sweet smell of honeysuckle and a few herb Roberts thrown in for good measure. Oh and did I mention it was raining! But still enjoying the views over the estuary and the fields of Stokeinteignhead. Marks were still there, apart from some which annoyingly the public had hidden under leaves, but you can’t fool a hasher and we stayed on trail. A few checks to keep everyone on their toes and most importantly the hash together and lots of calls of ‘On On’ to be heard.

Back to the Coombe Cellars for the down downs and to warm up/dry off.

Awards to the hare for as always a great trail, Earnie gave one to Forest for not being able to tie his own shoe- although I did think it as a proposal. Soapy got one for baby clothes shopping-no, no news from me it was for Hornies granddaughter!

Nice to see everyone, on on!

Palmolive.

BEEFY'S HITCHHIKER'S GUIDE TO THE GALAXY

Run #2130 Monday 25th May
The Bay Horse Inn at Ashburton
Beefys 'Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy'

Who was there:
Beefy, Pisswell, Beeflicker, Slip-on-me, Able Seamen, Swinger, Roger the Dodger, Bobbyball, Man Pig, Warmfront, Forrest, Georgie Porgie, Piltdown Man, Swinger's son, Piltdown's grandson
Visitor: Mr X
Virgin: Georgie's granddaughter
And eventually the GM Pocket Rocket....

Circle up:
Dates for S.M.ellie were asked for so if you haven't laid a trail in at least a week, put your name down to lay one. Manpig requested a volunteer for the dreaded words, with Pocket Rocket being half hour late and delaying us and a brief silence, yours truly volunteered to write them, I'm becoming quite the author, I could write a book, Beeflickers Guide to the Hash.

Over to the hare: dressed in a tartan dressing gown and a cup of tea, everyone was still working out why the towels? It all became abundantly clear later, in chapter 8, verse 3, titled the 'Sweety Stop'.
We were told, 3 and on, on the left and right, lots of criss crossing, walkers one way, shorts and longs the other, all dogs on leads please and due to many ladies in very little clothes, Man Pig also to be on a lead.

The trail... I didn't see much of the shorts or walkers apart from just before the sweety stop ( chapter 6 verse 1) in fact, I don't think anyone did the shorts. Those who went walking or did the longs, well done everyone as it was so hot out there, we didn't mind though as we had our towels so were looking forward to a swim stop.

We left the pub and proceeded straight across a foot bridge over the river Ashburn and then turned left down Ashburn close. Warmfront was leading the way. We then turned left and left again onto North street heading back towards the on down, was this to be the shortest hash ever? Nope, we turned left along Stapledon lane and followed it all the way down onto East street where we turned lef. We then turned right onto the aptly named Hares lane and right again on to Love lane. Here we saw Swinger checking out and supervising the check, while Manpig and Warmfront did some checking.

At this check, we went straight on along onto Wealena terrace, straight on again onto Trigger meadow and right onto Chuley Rd. We were soooo hot and sweaty but we didn't moan as we had our towels so the swim stop must be coming up soon. Here we turned left along a little footpath and then right along the A38.

As we came off the slipway, we turned right down a beautiful dirt path which was arched with trees, and then left onto Stone park crescent. Here we got a little lost, finding a cross in every direction until Warmfront found a little hidden gate and footpath - so up the hill we went and then right onto Western road. Then it was left up Bowden hill for a massive climb, we encountered a 4x4 coming down the hill so we all had to suck in our bellies and squeeze past, well, everyone apart from Warmfront and Swinger, they made it look easy.

At the top of the hill, which turned out to not be the top, we turned right up another bridleway hill and climbed all the way to the real top to the sweety stop, meeting the walkers going the opposite way, they all looked so happy and were clearly enjoying the trail.

Chapter 8 verse 4.. the sweety stop.....
Beefy was here at the top of the hill, his 4x4 backed up against the amazing view, the sun was shining bright and low, the sweeties all laid out, the cream soda flowing, a golden horde laid next to the gold bar wrapped in an orange. Here is where the theme became clear to us all and a great explanation of things from Beefy.

Chapter 8 verse 5... the second half....
We left the sweety stop, we were half-way through the trail, still hot and sweaty but still no complaints as we were having an amazing time and we had our towels so the swim stop MUST be coming soon.
We ran down the hill and then right at the bottom onto a footway in the trees. At the end it was a right onto Headborough road, at the bottom we could see the pub, we were nearly home but where was the swim stop? We had our towels but no swim. Ah, that's because we turned left here along new road and away from the pub. Pisswell reminded us that Beefy did a similar thing to us last time, got us nearly home and then took us away again. So, along New road it was and then a brief left and then a right into Nation field, out the field past the horses and baby rabbits and right and down the lane onto New road, we then turned right again, over a stone into our last field and back onto North street for the on home. We had our towels, but where was that swim stop? Beefy informed us that he never promised us a swim stop but it was in fact National Towel Day, hence the towels!

An amazing trail and lots of fun, loads or virgin ground for me, so, thank you, Beefy

Down downs
1st up... Pocket Rocket for forgetting to unplug his adult toy in his car, which drained his battery, causing him to be late, going against his own rule.

2nd up was Forrest for learning how to wear his towel correctly on his head.

3rd was Forrest again, not sure what this one was for but it was well deserved, I think it was for his dementia and forgetting where he was, how he got here and why he was here.

4th Was warmfront for bringing a tiny towel and comparing wieners with Roger the Dodger, it was a close call but Warmfront won, therefore the down down (and Roger the Dodger couldn't even blame the cold).

So where are we next week? As S.M.Ellie wasn't here, nobody knew so Beeflicker said he would get the diary up and have a look, oh bugger, it's me! Haha how could I forget?

On on to next week at the Coombe Cellars

ON ON BEEFLICKER

TVH THE WORDS RUN#2129

The English country garden at Heathercombe, Manaton.
The words for hash no….(who cares?)

Who was there?
Hare Pisswell, Beeflicker, Beefy, Pocket Rocket, Forrest, Strap on, Manopause, Erection, Warmfront, Pyscho, Wetfart, Manpig, Coldtits, SMEllie.

The circle: Pocket welcomed everyone ( excluding Wetfart), to probably one of the most beautiful CPs we have had. 14 brave hashers wore a selection of beautiful red dresses/ socks/ underwear in the cold drizzle. Late comers blew the time keeping to pot, and Wet fart finally returned from his magical journey into the fairy garden. He was welcomed into the circle individually and no one mentioned how long he seemed to have been away with the fairies! Half an hour later, SMEllie had asked for hares and the hare had warned of the hazards of the trail, particularly the hissing goose, which she had managed to pluck a feather from. There was no trail in these NGS gardens, who had opened especially for us for the evening. Donations to Rowcroft on return at the tea rooms and down down. The trails were short to allow for top up miles on hashers return. Any open gates we had permission to go in.

The trails:
Rowlf & Fozzie-English Country Garden
( a rough idea reminder of the tune!)
How many miles will brave hashers go?
To an English country garden?
Pikes let us park and run round their grounds
It’s so beau-to-ful at Heathercombe
NGS, and a cream tea
Raising cash for charity
A small donation, well, bless your cotton socks!
Walkers, shorts and longs, the hare forgets them not,
As they do the trails at Heathercombe
How many hashers come here to go
Through our English country Heathercombe?
I'll tell you now where hashers can go
No one will miss the lovely gardens.
Statues, bridges, green man peeps
At the hashers, ankle deep
Rhodys, azaleas, bluebells we leap
There are splits, choice of two
Which one will you do?
In the moorland over Heathercombe
How many longs run checks to and fro,
Along the Mariners Way from Heathercombe?
I'll tell you now of which way to go
Along footpaths that go to Kenton
Walkers go up to the moor
Watch the bluebells on the floor
Others to West Combe and watch for the geese!
Up a very steep bit, where shortly there’s a split
On the moorland over Heathercombe
How many brave longs face the elements
Of the cold and wind at King Tor?
Shorts keep down low, catch walkers trail to go
Above the fields and views of Heathercombe
Longs up steep onto the tor
See the viewpoint, wanting more
Grimspounds too far
There’s more gardens to see
There is joy on return
When who got lost we learn
What a way to go in Heathercombe!

Out takes: Well nothings perfect! Coldtits and Forrest went around in circles and are probably still away with the fairies in the fairy garden!

Pyscho got lost in the rhododendron confetti in her red dress and nobody could find her!
Congratulations to the kings of the castle,

who braved the King Tor mountain and luckily didn’t die of exposure!

Thank you to my translator, Wetfart, who was invaluable, and the only person who could have communicated in the same language as the grumpy farmer at Kenton, should we have needed him!
There was little garden checking on return as everyone was wet and cold and in competition with Pisswells blue lips at the circle!

Down downs:
Again a delay to start times, waiting for red dresses to be put on, drinks and cream teas to be served etc. We all felt like such rebels!

Forrest had to be encouraged as a returnee from the Vicar of Dibley film set. Eventually he agreed to become Jim Trott for one night only, hence further delays as he decided on whether misdemeanours were worthy. (No no no no no no, yes)

Pisswell was first down down as hare. Unfortunately, the pay back for choosing weird receptacles was that she drank from the child’s wellie boot. Sorry Pysho for trying to shampoo the dregs into your wet hair!

Strap on had the jesters hat and gave it to Manopause, for gallantly letting Warmfront do the checking on their trail. He bravely drank from the plant spray bottle. There’s no flies on him!
SMEllie was next for baling out on the longs. She drunk from the baby’s milk bottle, saying it still tasted like milk!

Coldtits drank and washed with water from the wobbly grizzly cup. Not sure why? Losing the trail?
Lastly , the hare was accused by Forrest for issuing parking penalties. Although, I think he was hoping she would offer it back to him, because he kept saying No no no no no , she offered the down down to Erection. It was nice to see the Penners back, and it was good to see him being a rebel and wearing an orange T shirt! …….And then Forrest said yes, a moment too late!

Can’t remember the songs but the grand old Duke of York featured heavily.

Thanks for the 14 brave souls. Just enough chairs in the tearoom and we collected £75 in donations for Rowcroft and a bit more for hare beer. Thank you for being so generous and for a really funny evening.
On on to next week at the Bay horse (or is it gay?)at Ashburton with Beefy. Don’t forget to bring a towel. On on  Pisswell x

RED DRESS RUN & CREAM TEA

Run #2129 Monday 18th May Circle up 7:15 pm from High Heathercombe Centre, Manaton, Newton Abbot TQ13 9XE for a Pisswell extravaganza.

DIRECTIONS
From Bovey Tracey take the scenic B3387 to Haytor/Widecombe. 1.7 miles past Haytor Rocks (before Widecombe Hill) turn right to Hound Tor & Manaton. 1.4 miles past Hound Tor turn left at Heatree Cross to Heathercombe.
We have special permission to park and go around their NGS gardens and Pisswell will be doing a cream tea and then do beers. They charge £6 a head normally to raise money for Rowcroft, therefore I’d like to make it a Red Dress Run and ask for donations for the evening. 🙂

TVH THE WORDS by Pollyfella

Hash Words for 11th May 2026 at Court Farm Inn, Abbotskerswell
Hares: Strap On & Strap Dancer

Who was there?
Archangel, Beeflicker, Big End, Fukawe, Manpig, Pisswell, Pollyfella, Roger the Dodger, Strap Dancer, Strap On, Well Hopped, Wetfart.

It was welcome return to the elegant Court Farm Inn. Conditions were dry although there was a cool breeze blowing. There were 13 in the pack and the circle was led by Beeflicker.

Pisswell reminded everyone that her hash next week (18th May) was a red dress run and she would be taking donations for Rowcroft on the night. The NGS Gardens at Heathercombe will be opening especially for the hash.

Strap On gave instructions for the trail ahead with a 2.5 mile walk, shorts just over 4 miles and the longs around 6. He also apologised for an extra section of road because he had wisely decided to make the trail detour around a field with two large bulls!

Strap On then announced that he had created a new hash symbol showing a dog. His creation indicated a “doggy detour” and we were invited to take and share photos of his new symbol.
There would be a sweetie stop and if the plan came together everyone should get there at around the same time.

And then we were off! The trail led out to Slade Lane and up Stoneman’s Hill and then along Manor Road with checks at each junction to slow us down. We then went up Laburnum Terrace and picked up a beautiful path with a stunning views on the left to Dartmoor. The trail then rejoined Stoneman’s Hill and after a 150 metres Pisswell, Beefy, Manpig and Pollyfella stopped to take in a stunning view point on the right which look across Newton About, Bishopsteignton and glimpses of the top of Teignmouth.
From here the trail went down hill until on our left we spotted the doggy detour symbol. Here the shorts and walkers turned off and the longs and those with dogs continued past Ogwell Cross Cemetery and then on to St Mary’s Church. Here the longs searched far and wide around the hillside for the trail. There were a few mistaken shouts of being “on” until Manpig and Beeflicker found the trail along the left side of the hill which looped and then descended to Woolborough Street. The longs were just about still sticking together.

Here we ran up to Bakers Park and alongside the football pitches. Then past Bradley Manor on our right and with the river Lemon to our left. Arrows then indicated a left turn over the river and into the woods. Here the longs came to a mark already kicked out by Big End and Well Hopped but this led us in the direction of a giant X marked on the hillside. Manpig followed what seemed the only alternative route up the path to the left where he also came to a X.

Confusion descended for a few minutes until Pollyfella found the trail going to the left of the giant X on the hill. From here it was clear running along a beautiful woodland path, past a stable and eventually out on to the Ogwell Road. Here arrows guided us left and after a few minutes decent the longs caught up with Fukawe, Big End and Well Hopped just after they turned right into Reynell Road.

We then ran as a pack and followed marks up Luxton Road until we spotted an SS mark. Here the marks sent us sharp left along a footpath which opened up on to a magical play park. Here Strap On and Strap Dancer awaited us with a banquet of sweets including the remarkable Terrys chocolate orange segments filled with popping candy. An extraordinary invention and bizarrely delicious.

Almost all the shorts and longs arrived within a few minutes just as Strap On had been hoping. It was just Archangel who was a little further back on the shorts who did not arrive at the same time.

Then we were off. We went up the hill behind the park where we came out on Denby Road the infamously long ascent to the Cool for Cats café. At the café we took the path to the left leading us over uneven ground to the dangerous A381. We crossed and ran on until we joined Manor Road. Here Manpig, Pollyfella and Beefy ran together, descending back to the village past the ON Home and back to the pub via Odle Hill.

A beautiful and creative trail with lots of virgin land and virgin sweeties!

A very big thank you to Strap Dancer and Strap On for all your hard work in planning and laying a wonderful trail.

The Down Downs
Before the on downs began there was drama in the car park when Roger the Dodger discovered that he had lost his credit card and feared this had occurred out on the trail. Beeflicker came to the rescue and went off to run the short trail in the gathering dusk and looming darkness to see if he could find it!
In the pub chilli was served and we cosied up in the bar with the locals.

Thankfully the locals seemed to quite enjoying having us there and they ending up getting fully immersed in the on downs…….
1. Archangel gave the joker hat to Strap On for “blowing off a sausage” the night before!
2. Pisswell gave the elephant cap to Roger the Dodger (inevitably!) for losing his credit card and being a scrooge. But instead of a half he was passed a shot of something strong by a local!
3. Next Well Hopped was nominated for her own forgetfulness! And being Scrooge’s daughter. Her down down was embellished by the chicken
4. Then Pollyfella was nominated for volunteering for the words!
5. Then a local who had parked his Ford Capril in the car park was nominated for having a moo sticker on the vehicle. Although not knowing the rules he polished off his down down mid song.
6. The down downs closed with a local presenting Manpig with another shot of that strong stuff! Which he gleefully polished off much to the amusement of the pack.

Next up on Monday 18th May we will be circling up at NGS Gardens in Heathercombe which is near Bovey Tracey. Pisswell will be the hare.

Big thanks again to Strap Dancer and Strap On for a great night.
