#1695 on Mon 12th June from The Carpenters Arms, Ilsington: Hare WINFIELD.
A great turnout on a bright sunny evening as the pack Circled up outside the Carpenters Arms where GM PILTDOWN asked if anyone could remember when our last visit was to this idyllic village and its pub? ABLE said correctly 14th September 2015 (which my diary says was No69's Trail on a very wet night) Also present at our circle was virgin Harriet HELEN introduced by METER MAID.
The Longs trail was only 4+ miles, but there were going to be a few testing hills to deal with on the way. On-On the pack headed out of the village soon finding the “Millennium trail” alongside the gushing stream, where eventually the Short split across (with permission) private land with a clapper bridge. for those who wanted to avoided the stream.
The Longs were now on their first climb up through Narracombe Wood to meet the lane, where after a back check the trail led them up even further to some great views above Higher Brimley out over the beautiful Devon countryside.
Soon a Med. split led them down hill to meet the Short in Ilsington Wood, while the Longs headed on along the ancient Tipleyhill Lane, then down a steep rocky track into Lenda Wood crossing the steam to Silver Wood.
Another sweet stop for the Long and Med Hashers was waiting here on top of the spoil heaps from the old mine working that took place here as far back as the 16th century. Lead, tin, ochre and traces of silver were mined The mine workings are reputed to be as deep as 1800ft and reach out under the surrounding lands.
But up above this the L&M trekked “on up” through the woodland, along the track to Simms Hill the site of the Devon Motor Clubs testing hill climb, it was bad enough going down but seeing cars tackle this event in January is well worth it.
One final hill and the pack were back in Ilsington where an excellent fish and chip meal had been prepared by the landlady, this was followed by the Dow Downs which were awarded to:-
PISSWELL- allowing her dog to poo on the trail.
FUKAWE- running in a heavy coat
COLDITZ - for having 13 entries (in her yacht race)
MELLON PICKER- seen preening himself carefully after the trail.
HELEN- a welcome drink for a new member
FUKAWE -having strong feelings for Havoc!
Hope you all enjoyed the trail and evening.
On to next week Circle at Dartmeet (Badgers Holt) OD The Forest Inn, Hexworthy,
Hares:-Pisswell & Slip On Me
On-On
