Piltdown welcomed two young visitors ( Soapy's granddaughters) who kindly handed around their delicious fairy cakes. Next his latest test question “when was the Avon Dam opened” correct answer from Wide Receiver 1957.
Off we set on the pairs trail which Woof-Woof said was about 4, not sure if she meant miles or hours! soon climbing up and up past ancient settlements on Zed Hill following a well marked trail, eventually up again, onto high open and now wild desolate Moorland of Bent Moor, where once long ago field systems were in production.
We did lose the trail in several places but with Wide, Fukawe, Whisperer and others all spread out on this vast open area of grassland it was soon On-On again through marshland and more remains of settlements and stone rings, trying to avoid tripping up on them as we passed over Ryders Rocks and the shiggy into Zeal Gully.
Looming into sight now across the valley was the immense Avon Dam, holding back the water in the massive reservoir. We could hear and see Teapot's and the Short down below as we scrambled over ankle twisting rocks and shiggy to the reservoir road.
Time now for a break at the Sweet Stop and quick photo, before the Longs headed on up to the Dam Ha-Ha! while the Short made a fast return run back down the valley towards Shipley Bridge.
The Oak was our O/D where the landlady was well prepared for Hash even keeping her kitchen open longer, which pleased the visitors who were now able to still get a meal!
Down Downs were awarded to these lucky! Hashers :-
